The NEET 2021 result for UG candidates was released by NTA on Monday and the top three candidates have all scored full marks of 720 out of 720. More than 16 lakh students had appeared for the NEET UG 2021 exam which had been held on September 12.
India Today got talking to Tanmay Gupta with AIR 2, who has created history by becoming the first NEET topper from Jammu and Kashmir while battling the trying circumstances involving a 4G internet shutdown for over 18 months in Kashmir valley and four districts of Jammu.
“I am glad that I could make my UT proud by bringing it on the forefront of our nation, as Jammu and Kashmir, despite being part of the country, is still kept separated as far as medical admissions in premier institutions of our country is concerned,” says Tanmay.
“If I can achieve this, everyone from J&K can achieve this; the only thing we need is to think outside the box and be consistent in our efforts,” says the NEET topper.
The journey to medical school
Tanmay had scored a percent 100 in both science and mathematics in his CBSE Class 10 board exams. This made his parents sit down to think of how they could enable the best future for their son.
Tanmay’s father, Dr. Akshay Gupta, Professor and Head of Orthodontics at Government Dental College, wanted him to polish his skills in an environment where he was competing with students from all parts of the country.
His mother Dr Shivali Gupta, a dentist by profession, agreed, and the family decided to send their only child to Delhi to study for Classes 11 and 12.
Tanmay rejoiced when he cracked the entrance to one of Delhi’s premier schools — DPS RK Puram and spread his wings in the new environment with more scope. He then prepared for the all-India medical entrance exam diligently.
“I had a target to secure admission in one of the best institutions of the country Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi, to study medical, but God had different plans for me,” says the NEET topper.
Tanmay is now eligible to study at India’s best medical college, AIIMS Delhi.
The importance of being consistent in studies
The NEET 2021 AIR 2 says that it is more important to study consistently than study for more hours.
“I used to study 3 to 5 hours every day after school and whenever it was holiday, it used to be 7 to 8 hours,” he said.
“I always had targeted for each day, and when I accomplished that, it used to give me a sense of euphoria and helped keep me motivated to achieve my next target and to maintain and improve my work,” Tanmay adds.
